Fertilizer Canada urges swift resolution to St. Lawrence Seaway strike
Fertilizer Canada is pressing the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) and Unifor to promptly resolve a strike that has brought operations on the St. Lawrence Seaway to a standstill. Unifor members employed by the SLSMC submitted a 72-hour strike notice on October 18, signaling their intention to strike on October 22.
The ongoing labor dispute comes at a critical time for Eastern Canada, which relies on fall imports of fertilizer in preparation for spring cultivation. Fertilizer Canada’s President and CEO, Karen Proud, emphasized the importance of ensuring a stable fertilizer supply to safeguard crop yields and food security.
“Our industry is dependent on reliable supply chains to deliver products to farmers in a timely fashion. Even a brief interruption can hinder our ability to serve the agricultural community effectively,” said Proud.
This is the second labor conflict within the past four months to shutter Canadian ports, causing significant concerns about broader economic impact. Proud asserted that while the organization respects the collective bargaining process, the closure of the St. Lawrence Seaway would have adverse effects on Canada’s economy.
Proud also called for immediate action to reinforce Canada’s supply chains once the labor dispute is settled. “Following resolution, the government must expedite the recommendations made by the 2022 National Supply Chain Task Force, including measures to address recurrent delays due to labor disputes,” she added.
The Canadian fertilizer industry is heavily reliant on the St. Lawrence Seaway for the transportation of vital nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash. These nutrients are essential for plant growth and are used by over 190,000 Canadian farmers annually.
In the context of global pressures like the war in Ukraine affecting the fertilizer supply, Proud underlined the necessity of resilient supply chains to maintain Canada’s standing as a dependable trading partner.
