Urea market faces global supply crunch as Chinese exports remain low
Global urea supplies are facing severe constraints due to ongoing reductions in exports from China, compounded by production issues in several countries. Harry Minihan, editor of Argus Nitrogen, highlighted that China, traditionally a major exporter of urea, has significantly reduced shipments to prioritize domestic needs amid expanded agricultural acreage and robust industrial demand.
As of July, China has shipped minimal urea, far below the expected three to four million tonnes projected earlier this year for the May-to-October export window. This sharp decline stems from measures initiated in October 2021 during the pandemic, aimed at securing resources for China’s food and energy sectors.
The situation is further exacerbated by production challenges in other key regions. In Egypt, urea production has been sporadic since May 20 due to natural gas supply disruptions and prioritization of gas for cooling systems amid a summer heatwave. This has led to reduced operational capacity for fertilizer producers, with similar production setbacks reported in Malaysia and Russia. Nigeria, another significant player in the market, has also reduced its market presence.
These supply constraints are occurring alongside fluctuating global demand. Urea prices have soared, dampening demand as key agricultural markets like India scale back their purchases due to substantial domestic stockpiles and increased local production. In 2024, India’s urea imports have drastically reduced, further influencing global pricing dynamics.
The global urea market remains tight, with analysts like Josh Linville from StoneX noting that while some supply relief might emerge later in the year as production issues are resolved, the overall market sentiment is cautious. With key markets like India not expected to significantly boost demand in the short term, urea prices are likely to remain high, posing challenges for agricultural sectors worldwide.
