Atlas Agro and International Raw Materials forge partnership for green fertilizer distribution

Atlas Agro, a pioneer in low-carbon fertilizer production, has joined forces with International Raw Materials Ltd (IRM), a major distributor of plant nutrients, in a strategic offtake and marketing agreement focusing on green nitrogen fertilizers. This collaboration originates from Atlas Agro’s Pacific Green Fertilizer (PGF) plant based in Richland, Washington.

The PGF plant is poised to become the first large-scale facility globally dedicated to low-carbon fertilizer production, aiming to generate 700,000 tons of nitrogen fertilizer annually. This initiative targets the agricultural needs of the Pacific Northwest, leveraging renewable energy sources and advanced technologies to produce crop nutrients that enhance yield and quality while contributing significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The partnership with IRM is expected to enhance the distribution and accessibility of these eco-friendly fertilizers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region. Petter Østbø, CEO of Atlas Agro, emphasized the strategic importance of this alliance, noting IRM’s robust market presence and logistical expertise, which are crucial for introducing sustainable fertilizer options to local farmers.

Tip O’Neill, President of IRM, highlighted the growing demand for sustainable agricultural products as companies and consumers increasingly seek to mitigate environmental impacts, particularly Scope 3 emissions, which pertain to indirect emissions in the value chain.

Atlas Agro has also completed the preliminary engineering and design phase for the PGF plant and has received the necessary environmental clearances. With a final investment decision expected by early 2025, the facility will produce various forms of green nitrogen fertilizers, including liquid and solid types, which promise higher crop yields and reduced soil acidification compared to traditional fertilizers.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
