thyssenkrupp Uhde and Brunei Fertilizer Industries join forces to implement digital and sustainable technologies

thyssenkrupp Uhde has signed a five-year framework service agreement with Brunei Fertilizer Industries Sdn Bhd (BFI), aimed at strengthening the use of digital technologies and sustainability measures at BFI’s production facilities.
As part of the agreement, thyssenkrupp Uhde will implement a digital twin of the BFI plant. This virtual representation is intended to support real-time operational monitoring, predictive maintenance, and data-driven decision-making. The initiative is expected to contribute to improved energy efficiency, reduced downtime, and enhanced safety.
The cooperation also includes sustainability evaluations for a potential second fertilizer complex. thyssenkrupp Uhde will assess pathways to lower emissions and integrate cleaner production technologies. These include the use of carbon capture for blue ammonia production and options for green ammonia based on renewable energy sources.
BFI CEO Dr. Harri Kiiski said the agreement reflects the strong partnership between the two companies. “Reducing our environmental impact is at the core of our efforts, particularly in improving the carbon footprint of our products,” Kiiski said. “With one of the most advanced plants globally, we inherently operate at a lower carbon footprint than older facilities, which typically average 50 years in operation.”
thyssenkrupp Uhde CEO Nadja Håkansson stated: “We are proud to support BFI in its ambitious journey towards innovation and sustainability. By leveraging our technology and implementation expertise, we create lasting value for our customer and set new standards in operational excellence.”
The current BFI plant, built by thyssenkrupp Uhde, includes an ammonia unit with a capacity of 2,200 metric tons per day, a urea plant, and a urea granulation facility, both with a capacity of 3,900 metric tons per day. The facility primarily produces nitrogen-based fertilizer for export markets.
Established in 2013 and fully owned by the Government of Brunei Darussalam, BFI operates one of Southeast Asia’s largest single-train fertilizer plants, located at the Sungai Liang Industrial Park in the Belait District.
thyssenkrupp Uhde specializes in technology and services for chemical plants and offers engineering solutions in fertilizer, hydrogen, and sustainable chemicals.
