Fertilizers Europe warns EU tariff suspension threatens domestic production

Fertilizers Europe has warned that the European Council’s decision to suspend customs tariffs for one year on key nitrogen fertilizers, including urea and ammonia, risks weakening the bloc’s domestic production base at a time when the EU is prioritizing strategic autonomy.
The producer association said the one-year suspension of most-favored-nation (MFN) tariffs “sends the wrong signal,” cautioning that it could undermine a European fertilizer industry the EU has recently identified as essential for food security, farmer resilience and long-term competitiveness.
The group stopped short of opposing support for farmers facing high input costs, acknowledging that affordable access to quality fertilizers is essential for agricultural production. Its objection centers on balance: “EU farmers and fertilizer producers are part of the same value chain,” the association said, arguing that measures weakening one part of that chain will ultimately erode the resilience of the whole agri-food system.
Fertilizers Europe called on the European Commission to monitor the measure’s impact on EU production closely, ensure it remains temporary, and avoid any extension that would further weaken domestic manufacturing. It framed the suspension as a short-term crisis response that should give way to a coherent framework delivering on the objectives of the bloc’s Fertiliser Action Plan.
The intervention sets up a test of how the Commission balances farmer affordability against industrial protection as elevated nitrogen prices persist through 2026.
