Ukraine may lose 15-25% of its crops

According to Igor Semenyak (Director of the Agriculture Institute of the steppe zone of the National Academy of Agrarian Science of Ukraine), the country may lose 15-25% of the 2020 yield due to spring frosts.

“Rape plant, which was underdeveloped in autumn or overgrown, suffered greatly. Barley and winter crops also suffered to a certain extent,” said Igor Semenyak.

He also emphasized that the yield will depend on the frost resistance of the crops and technologies the farmers use. Most crops, especially the Ukrainian breeding, have already withstood such poor weather conditions.

“The winter crops will yield not lower than average. However, we predict that spring frosts will lead to late vegetation development. Plants reduced their growth and development intensity, consequently yield shortage can reach 15-25%,” he said.
