CropX, a leading provider of digital agronomic solutions, has announced its acquisition of EnGeniousAg, a startup specializing in advanced nitrogen-sensing technologies for agriculture. The move marks CropX’s sixth acquisition and aims to bolster its capabilities in precision nitrogen fertilizer management, which is crucial for reducing input costs and promoting sustainable farming practices.

EnGeniousAg has developed a groundbreaking nitrogen-sensing technology designed to measure nitrogen levels in plants, soil, and water in real-time. This innovation provides farmers with valuable data to optimize fertilizer applications, improving crop performance while minimizing environmental impacts. Nitrogen fertilizers, a major input cost for farmers, are often inefficiently used, leading to greenhouse gas emissions and nitrate pollution in waterways. EnGeniousAg’s sensors are poised to tackle this inefficiency by enabling farmers to make informed decisions based on real-time nitrogen measurements.

Tomer Tzach, CEO of CropX, noted that nitrogen management remains a critical challenge in modern farming. He emphasized that the acquisition highlights the company’s commitment to offering comprehensive agronomic solutions that address both sustainability and profitability.

Similarly, Mike Castellano, co-founder of EnGeniousAg, explained that the technology had undergone years of optimization and field testing. He expressed enthusiasm about bringing the solution to the global market as part of CropX’s farm management system.

The integration of EnGeniousAg’s technology into CropX’s platform will offer farmers enhanced data-driven recommendations. With the combined technology, CropX aims to provide significant cost savings and operational efficiencies by improving nitrogen use efficiency in crops—a solution that not only addresses farm profitability but also tackles pressing environmental concerns.

Nitrogen fertilizer loss, a problem affecting farmers worldwide, contributes to both economic and environmental damage. Current inefficiencies result in up to 70% of applied nitrogen not reaching crops, escaping into the environment through runoff or greenhouse gas emissions. EnGeniousAg’s sensors, combined with CropX’s advanced analytics, will offer a new level of precision in managing this critical input, addressing a major sustainability crisis in modern agriculture.

By acquiring EnGeniousAg, CropX strengthens its position as a leader in agtech innovation, empowering farmers across 70 countries with the tools to optimize input use, reduce environmental impact, and boost overall farm productivity. The acquisition follows CropX’s recent purchase of Australia-based Green Brain in December 2023, further expanding its global reach and technological offerings.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
