In the verdant hills of Kericho, Kenya, coffee farmer Amy Selim utilizes a groundbreaking tool called Virtual Agronomist, which leverages artificial intelligence to optimize fertilizer use via WhatsApp. This AI tool recently advised her to cut back on her usual fertilizer amount, potentially saving her money and increasing her yield to 7.9 tonnes from a previous high of 7.3 tonnes on her 1-acre farm. This smart farming technique has transformed her agricultural practices, which previously relied on conventional wisdom and sporadic soil tests.

The adoption of AI tools in agriculture is rising across Kenya as farmers, like Selim, face challenges such as pestilence, disease, and a shortage of agricultural extension officers due to funding cuts. Tools like Virtual Agronomist and PlantVillage are bridging this gap by providing real-time, data-driven advice. PlantVillage, for instance, assists farmers in identifying crop diseases and pests through image recognition technology.

Despite their potential, reliance on such technologies raises concerns among experts like Angeline Wairegi, who argues that AI tools might sideline indigenous farming knowledge which has been proven over generations. However, for many Kenyan farmers, the benefits of AI in agriculture, such as increased productivity and reduced costs, are too significant to overlook.

This technological shift in Kenyan agriculture is part of a broader trend observed in a report by the GSM Association, highlighting that the majority of AI applications in African nations like Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa are focused on agriculture and food security.
