Biofuel push drives Bayer and Neste winter canola partnership
Bayer and Neste have formalized plans to scale the production of winter canola in the U.S., targeting its use as a raw material for renewable fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The agreement, expected to be finalized this year, seeks to establish a robust value chain for winter canola, addressing the increasing demand for biofuel feedstocks while promoting sustainable farming practices.
Winter canola, used as a rotational crop, offers dual benefits: improving soil health and providing farmers with a new income stream. By increasing organic matter, enhancing water retention, and sequestering carbon, the crop strengthens farm productivity and aligns with regenerative agriculture principles. Bayer plans to launch its TruFlex hybrid canola in 2027, featuring advanced traits like pod shatter resistance and Roundup Ready technology to improve yield stability.
Frank Terhorst, Bayer’s Head of Strategy and Sustainability for its Crop Science Division, pointed to the strategic importance of biofuel feedstocks in decarbonizing transportation and energy sectors. He emphasized the role of innovation and investment in delivering reliable, low-carbon solutions to global markets.
Neste, a leading producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, will collaborate to develop a scalable value chain for winter canola. The company’s focus on regenerative farming practices underscores its broader strategy to diversify renewable raw materials and reduce reliance on fossil feedstocks. According to Artturi Mikkola, Neste’s Senior Vice President of Feedstock Sourcing and Trading, winter canola complements the company’s commitment to sustainable solutions, offering reduced carbon intensity and environmental benefits.
The partnership reflects a broader trend in agribusiness, as farmers increasingly seek profitable and sustainable cropping options amid regulatory and market pressures to reduce carbon emissions. With winter canola positioned as a practical and scalable solution, Bayer and Neste aim to deliver environmental and economic value to farmers while advancing the renewable energy sector.
