On Saturday, an ammonia gas leak affected at least 16 students from a government school located near the premises of the Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals (CFC) plant in the city of Kota, Rajasthan, India. The incident occurred during the morning prayer assembly when students and staff were suddenly overwhelmed by a strong odor of gas, leading to breathing difficulties, fainting, and vomiting among the students.

Local villagers and school authorities have attributed the cause of the leak to the CFC factory. In response to the emergency, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was deployed to conduct relief and rescue operations. Energy Minister Hiralal Nagar and Education Minister Madan Dilawar ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.

All 16 students who fainted from gas exposure received medical assistance. Five students were released after receiving first aid; five other students remained under care at the CFC corporate hospital, and another six students were transferred to JK Lone Hospital in Kota for further medical evaluation. Health assessments were also conducted for an additional 200 students present during the incident.

A thorough investigation is ongoing, and authorities are committed to strict action against any negligence found at the CFC plant. State Education Minister Madan Dilawar affirmed the education department’s support for the affected families, expressing relief that all students are safe and wishing them a quick recovery. The government has also promised to enforce accountability and stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Europe is falling behind in this field. The concerns 30 years ago was reasonable. Now not so much. We need crops that can survive in a more extreme future climate. Handle droughts and hot weather better. Crops that are less tasty to pests like hogs and deere.
