Russia and Pakistan are preparing to expand bilateral trade in agricultural commodities through the St. Petersburg Exchange. Grain will be the first product traded under a new pilot initiative.

The arrangement is being developed as part of a mandate from the Russian government and under the framework of the Russian-Pakistani intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation. The St. Petersburg Exchange, supported by the Business Council of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recently hosted a meeting to advance the plan.

Participants in the videoconference included representatives of the exchange, Russian regional authorities, agro-industrial companies, the Russian-Pakistani Business Council, and Pakistani businesses. They discussed creating a sustainable mechanism for cross-border exchange trading.

Russian agricultural producers expressed strong interest in supplying grain and other products to Pakistan, while KMAK Group CEO Arsalla Khan confirmed Pakistan’s readiness to purchase a range of goods through the exchange.

The discussions build on a prior visit by Pakistan’s Trading Corporation to the exchange’s headquarters. Beyond grain and legumes, Pakistan has signaled interest in buying Russian oil products, vegetable oil, and mineral fertilizers. In return, Pakistan could supply cotton, rice, vegetables and fruits to Russia through the same platform.

It is alarming to see these developments in California. As a vineyard grower, I have faced significant challenges this year, with fertilizer costs rising sharply while market conditions have made it difficult to sell the harvest.
