EVREC files environmental impact statement for 1mt/yr green ammonia project in Newfoundland

Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) has filed the environmental impact statement for its wind-to-green ammonia project in Central Newfoundland, reaching a key regulatory milestone for one of Canada’s most advanced clean-fuel initiatives.
EVREC, a joint venture between Abraxas Power Corp and EDF Power Solutions, submitted the document to the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Climate Change on May 15. The filing covers all project phases from construction through eventual decommissioning and reflects extensive technical, environmental, and socio-economic studies conducted over several years.
At full capacity, the facility is designed to produce approximately 180,000 tonnes per year of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin hydrogen, or up to 1 million tonnes per year of RFNBO ammonia for export to global markets. The project will be powered by more than 3 gigawatts of onshore wind generation, supported by energy storage and associated infrastructure.
EVREC said the project represents a multi-billion-dollar investment for Newfoundland and Labrador, supporting regional employment and supply chains. The company is continuing Front-End Engineering and Design work and engaging prospective offtake partners in international markets. No financing partners or offtake agreements have been publicly disclosed.
“The submission of our Environmental Impact Statement represents a major step forward in advancing a project that has been carefully designed with environmental responsibility and regional and community benefits in mind,” said Dean Comand, EVREC’s chief operating officer. He added that the company has engaged communities, Indigenous partners, and regulators throughout the process.
The EIS review process allows regulators, Indigenous groups, and the public to examine project data and submit comments before permitting can proceed. EVREC is pursuing a project timed to benefit from accelerating global demand for green ammonia as an industrial decarbonization fuel and low-carbon fertilizer feedstock.
