Agromin and Limoneira advance 70-acre composting center in California

Agromin and Limoneira have cleared land for a 70-acre commercial composting center in Santa Paula, California, expanding an existing green-waste processing operation that has operated on the property since 2004. The joint venture facility is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2027 and will be capable of processing about 295,000 tons of organic waste annually into compost and mulch.

The project will expand Agromin’s existing 15-acre site, which will remain operational during construction and is currently the only permitted commercial composting center in Ventura County. The larger facility is designed to process both green and food waste and support California communities seeking to comply with Senate Bill 1383, which requires major reductions in the amount of organic waste sent to landfills. Limoneira and Agromin formed the venture on a 50/50 basis, with revenue expected from waste-hauler gate fees and sales of compost and other recycled materials.

Agromin has also expanded its food-waste recycling operations in Ventura County, including a dedicated facility in Oxnard that converts collected food waste into a slurry for further processing into products including renewable natural gas, fertilizers, animal feed and compost. The Santa Paula expansion is expected to increase local processing capacity as California continues to build infrastructure for diverting organic material from landfills.
