Nigeria has counted its farmers

According to the statement of the Minister of Agriculture of Nigeria Sabo Nanono, the government has registered 5 million smallholder farmers to provide them with subsidies for purchasing agrochemicals as part of the presidential fertilizer program.

The country currently has enterprises, which totally can produce 2 million tons of carbamide and 4 million tons of compound fertilizers per year. At the same time, the provision of farmers with agrochemicals is a big issue for the government of Nigeria due to corruption and lack of reliable information. This problem may be solved with the help of a database of farmers.

“During the preparation for the subsidy, the Ministry of Agriculture of Nigeria has created a database with information on smallholder farmers. At the moment, 5 million farmers are registered using their biometric data,” said Sabo Nanono.
