RUSAL begins testing silicon-based fertilizer that may reduce reliance on traditional NPK inputs

RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminum producers, has launched pilot tests of a new silicon-based fertilizer at its agricultural subsidiary RUSAL AgroSibir. The company is experimenting with the use of microsilica, a by-product of its silicon production, as a partial substitute for conventional nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) fertilizers.

The trials are being conducted during the spring sowing campaign at one of RUSAL AgroSibir’s farms in the Republic of Khakassia. A total of 45 demonstration plots have been designated for the study—15 each for peas, wheat and rapeseed. The experiment will assess various combinations of microsilica and traditional NPK fertilizers to determine whether microsilica can replace at least 20% of NPK inputs without compromising crop yields.

“Microsilica has not been widely applied in agriculture, and our field trials were preceded by research and lab studies,” said Alexey Arnautov, Deputy General Director of RUSAL for New Projects. “As a by-product of silicon production, it is considerably less expensive than complex fertilizers. If it proves effective, it can significantly reduce costs for agricultural producers.”

According to the company, preliminary research suggests that the monosilicic acid released when microsilica is added to soil improves plant productivity and resilience under challenging climatic conditions. It also enhances soil moisture retention, potentially lowering irrigation requirements.

Following the initial field trials, RUSAL plans to conduct broader industrial-scale tests and pursue product certification, depending on results.

RUSAL remains the sole domestic producer of metallurgical-grade silicon in Russia, operating facilities in Kamensk-Uralsky (Sverdlovsk region) and Shelekhov (Irkutsk region).

RUSAL AgroSibir was established in 2022 as part of a regional development initiative in Krasnoyarsk Krai and the Republic of Khakassia. The subsidiary focuses on grain cultivation and rural job creation, while also working to restore fallow land and modernize agricultural practices and equipment.
