Syngenta launches Atuva Chickpea inoculant to boost nitrogen fixation, 15-day survival

Syngenta Canada has launched Atuva Chickpea, a seed- and soil-applied liquid inoculant designed to improve nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation in chickpeas, the company said. The product uses Syngenta’s Osmo Protection Technology to shield rhizobia bacteria from temperature swings, moisture deficits and co-applied seed treatments that can otherwise reduce microbial survival.

Atuva Chickpea requires no pre-mixing and is applied at a low rate, with an on-seed survival window of 15 days that Syngenta said gives growers more planting flexibility. The product is distributed in cases of two 5.45-liter bladders and carries a single-season shelf life. Syngenta said compatibility testing was conducted with agricultural microbiology specialist Rizobacter, independent laboratories and the Syngenta Seedcare Institute to confirm performance alongside other crop-protection treatments.

The launch extends Syngenta’s Atuva biologicals franchise, which already covers other pulse and soybean inoculants, as chemical companies expand into microbial products that can reduce reliance on synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. Syngenta acquired biologicals specialist Intrinsyx Bio in May and separately licensed Rootella mycorrhizal inoculant technology from Groundwork BioAg in July, moves the company has said are aimed at building out its nutrient-use-efficiency portfolio.
