BioWorks launches BioRain Ax microbial inoculant to boost crop resilience in water-limited fields

BioWorks, a Victor, New York-based provider of biological crop protection and plant health products, has launched BioRain Ax, a microbial inoculant designed to help crops maintain growth and yield under water-limited conditions. The product targets commercial growers of outdoor specialty crops, ornamentals, greenhouses and nurseries — segments where water stress can cause rapid economic losses.
How BioRain Ax microbial inoculant works
BioRain Ax delivers a consortium of three beneficial bacteria — Priestia megaterium, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus paralicheniformis — that colonize the rhizosphere to improve soil structure, increase water retention and enhance nutrient availability. The microbial consortium builds a stronger, deeper root system that enables more efficient water and nutrient uptake, according to BioWorks.
“Growers need products that work in real-world conditions and help them protect yield when access to water is limited,” said Chris Rose, General Manager at BioWorks. “BioRain Ax was developed to give growers a practical, easy-to-use tool that supports plant health, improves water-use efficiency and helps crops perform through drought stress.”
Field trial results show measurable yield gains
In a field trial evaluating the BioRain Ax microbial inoculant on watermelon under drought and transplant stress conditions, treated plants produced 14.5% heavier fruit with less cracking, more uniform production and better-developed foliage compared with untreated controls. The product is formulated as a liquid and sold in 1-gallon containers.
Industry context: microbial products gain traction as costs rise
The launch adds to a growing wave of microbial and biological products entering commercial agriculture as synthetic fertilizer and crop protection costs remain elevated. The BioRain Ax microbial inoculant joins a competitive landscape that includes Bacillus-based biostimulants from multiple suppliers, as well as more novel approaches such as the plasma-enhanced cyanobacteria biofertilizer developed at Huazhong University and the nitrogen-fixing microbes from Switch Bioworks and Pivot Bio.
A 2026 review in Frontiers in Plant Science noted that while microbial biostimulants have shown measurable improvements in drought resilience across cereals, barley and specialty crops, results are often context-specific and may not be consistently reproducible under different field conditions. The review emphasized the need for multi-location, multi-season trials before drawing commercial-scale conclusions — a standard that applies to BioRain Ax as well.
BioWorks was founded in 1993 and has built its product portfolio around biological solutions for horticulture and specialty agriculture. Earlier in 2026, the company launched TotalNema Ax, a botanical nematicide, and appointed Chris Rose as interim general manager to drive sales expansion.
