Casale wins contract for 100 tpd modular green ammonia plant in Norway’s Glomfjord

Swiss engineering group Casale has signed a contract to engineer and supply a 100 tonnes-per-day modular green ammonia plant in Norway for Neptun Glomfjord Green Ammonia AS (NGGA), the company announced on September 23. The facility will be built at Glomfjord Industrial Park in northern Norway.

NGGA is a Norwegian project company developing green ammonia at the park, relying on the region’s renewable power and existing industrial infrastructure to serve local ammonia demand. Casale will deliver the plant under an engineering, procurement and fabrication (EPF) model using its proprietary SMART-N technology. The company developed that process specifically for small-scale ammonia production based on renewable hydrogen, and says it offers a wide operating range at an affordable levelized cost of ammonia.

The plant will be fabricated as modules largely off-site, which Casale said is intended to reduce the volume and complexity of construction work at Glomfjord. At 100 tonnes per day, the unit would produce roughly 36,500 tonnes a year if run at full capacity year-round, a Fertilizer Daily calculation.

The ammonia will not stop at the plant gate. Third parties will process it into nitric acid, ammonium nitrate-sulfate (ANS) and fertilizers, linking the project to a lower-carbon nitrogen value chain in Norway. Casale did not disclose the contract value or a start-up date.

Small-scale, modular ammonia is attracting growing interest as a way to cut capital risk for renewable projects. Earlier this month, Ammobia and Lummus agreed to commercialize modular ammonia production, while on the demand side food companies formed an alliance to buy green ammonia fertilizer.
