Técnicas Reunidas wins key reformer deal for Dangote’s 3mt Gode fertilizer project

Spain’s Técnicas Reunidas will design and supply two hydrogen production reformers for the Gode fertilizer project in Ethiopia, a gas-based ammonia and urea complex being developed by Dangote, World Fertilizer reported on October 28.
The contract covers design, procurement, manufacture and free-on-board (FOB) supply of the two reformers, which will produce the hydrogen needed to make ammonia and then urea. The contract value was not disclosed.
The Gode complex is designed to produce 3 million tonnes of urea a year from Ethiopia’s natural gas reserves. The project aims to cut the country’s dependence on fertilizer imports and the foreign currency spent on them, while supplying neighboring markets.
Dangote plans to list at least 10% of the venture on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange once production ramps up, with operations scheduled to start in 2029, as Fertilizer Daily reported on October 21. The venture is valued at more than $4B.
The award expands Técnicas Reunidas’ presence in Africa. Reformers are among the long-lead items for ammonia plants, so the order is an early signal that procurement for Gode is moving ahead.
Ethiopia relies almost entirely on imported fertilizer. A domestic urea plant of this size would also make it a potential exporter to East Africa, where Gulf shipments have been disrupted by the Strait of Hormuz closure in 2026.
