Egypt approves solar land for ACURE green ammonia project

Egypt’s National Council for Green Hydrogen, chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, approved a 12-square-kilometre plot in West Zafarana for India’s ACURE. The site will host a 600-megawatt solar plant to power the pilot phase of ACURE’s green ammonia project.
The pilot targets 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia a year. The wider project is planned to reach one million tonnes a year through later phases.
The council also approved a one-year extension of its memorandum of understanding with Saudi developer ACWA Power for an East Nile project producing 66,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 500,000 tonnes of green ammonia a year.
Neither project has reached financial close or construction. Power purchase and grid arrangements, environmental permits and final investment decisions are still outstanding.
The ACURE project is planned to grow to one million tonnes a year through successive phases. Egypt has signed several green hydrogen agreements with international developers, and in February 2024 it announced seven cooperation agreements with anticipated investment above $40 billion over 10 years.
