      Never miss important fertilizer news

A Chilean developer has filed plans for a $4.7 billion green ammonia and wind power project in the country’s far south, targeting 4,100 metric tons of ammonia a day produced entirely for export.

Consorcio Austral submitted the proposal for environmental review, according to Renewables Now. The plant would draw on dedicated wind capacity to power electrolysis, splitting water to produce the hydrogen feedstock for renewable, or “green,” ammonia, avoiding the natural gas used in conventional ammonia synthesis.

The project adds to a lengthening pipeline of green ammonia developments competing to supply low-carbon nutrients and marine fuel. Southern Chile has become a focal point for such projects because of its strong, consistent Patagonian winds, which can push renewable-power utilization high enough to improve the economics of continuous ammonia production.

Ammonia is the building block for most nitrogen fertilizers, so export-scale green ammonia capacity could feed low-carbon urea and other products in importing markets, including those facing carbon border charges. The proposal joins a broader wave of Latin American projects, including green ammonia plants advancing in Brazil. It remains at the permitting stage, and the developer has not announced financing, offtake agreements, or a construction timeline.

It is alarming to see these developments in California. As a vineyard grower, I have faced significant challenges this year, with fertilizer costs rising sharply while market conditions have made it difficult to sell the harvest.
