Topsoe supplies ammonia synthesis technology for First Ammonia’s green plant in Texas

Topsoe has partnered with First Ammonia to supply dynamic ammonia synthesis technology for a green ammonia production facility planned in Victoria, Texas, with operations targeted for 2029, according to Fuel Cells Works. The deal follows Topsoe’s exit as the project’s electrolyzer supplier, shifting its role to the ammonia synthesis loop where it has deeper commercial experience.

First Ammonia’s Victoria facility is designed to produce green ammonia using hydrogen generated from renewable-powered electrolysis. Topsoe’s dynamic synthesis technology is specifically engineered to handle the variable hydrogen feed rates inherent in renewable-powered operations, where electrolyzer output fluctuates with wind and solar generation patterns.

The project is part of a wave of green ammonia developments across the U.S. Gulf Coast, alongside CF Industries’ Blue Point blue ammonia joint venture in Louisiana and Yara’s recently acquired Gulf Coast Ammonia plant in Texas City. Victoria’s location offers access to Gulf port infrastructure for potential ammonia exports.
